Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel recently said the company could have results on its coronavirus vaccine candidate by November, according to a news report.
As of Wednesday, the company had enrolled about 84% of all participants for the COVE phase 3 study of its candidate vaccine, mRNA-1273, at 100 research sites. An estimated 28% of these participants come from diverse communities, a company update said.
According to a report by The Boston Globe, Bancel said Moderna expected to see results in October, but a recent drop in the national average number of cases created difficulties in reaching the number of infections among trial participants needed to see if the candidate vaccine outperforms the placebo. .
If the infection rate continues to fall, Bancel said the reading could occur in December, the outlet wrote.

Bancel reportedly said it “doesn’t matter” if Pfizer announces its efficacy results first, adding that a pharmaceutical company cannot supply enough vaccines to stop the global pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration has previously said that it expects a “COVID-19 vaccine to prevent the disease or lessen its severity in at least 50% of vaccinated people.”
If Moderna reaches this benchmark, Bancel would have said it would quickly seek emergency approval to begin distribution.
“At that point, we can ship whatever we have in store” to the federal government, Bancel said, according to The Boston Globe.
