MANILA – A lawmaker allied with ousted President Alan Peter Cayetano said Monday he was ready to be removed from the chairmanship of a committee to clear the way for new leadership in the lower house.
Speaking to the ANC’s “Matters of Fact”, Anakalusugan party list representative Mike Defensor said that newly installed President Lord Allan Jay Velasco had a free hand to choose whoever he trusts.
“The Speaker, of course, will choose from among his followers who he wants to be here on these committees (on who he wants to put on these committees),” he said. “It’s okay with me (I’m okay with it). Whatever the decision.”
Whoever should lead the House panel on public accounts is crucial to have the support of the new president as he investigates government agencies, said Defensor.
The committee is tasked with examining and scrutinizing “audit reports on the performance of all government agencies to determine their adherence or compliance with plans and programs authorized through appropriations approved by the Legislature,” according to the House of Representatives website. .
Defensor, who supported the extension of Cayetano as Spokesperson, said he would support Velasco regarding the institution.
“Yes, ako naman, sinabi ko dati pa na (I have said it before) is the institution. You have the leadership of the House, ”he said.
On Wednesday, a close ally of Cayetano, Camarines Sur District 2 Deputy LRay Villafuerte, was removed as vice president. He was replaced by Pacman’s party list representative, Mikee Romero, a Velasco ally.
Apart from Romero, another Velasco ally, Mindoro Oriental representative Doy Leachon, took over as senior vice president from Davao city representative Paolo Duterte.
The president’s son assumed the presidency of the Chamber’s accounts committee.
