MANILA, Philippines – As questions surround the results of the Miss Universe Philippines pageant, volleyball star turned beauty queen Michele Gumabao admitted to hearing “things she shouldn’t have heard” after pre-filming the coronation of the possible winners. .
Gumabao shared a video on his YouTube channel on Monday detailing his journey with the inaugural contest.
She also addressed speculation about the contest’s results and the circulating photo of the top five candidates without herself. Gumabao finished second runner-up in the contest.
“I heard things that I wasn’t supposed to hear,” Gumabao recalls.
“It hurts. I must admit I went back to my room and cried so hard … I was devastated that night. I called my family and wanted to go home,” she added.
Gumabao did not elaborate on what he heard and caused his “devastation”.
However, after Iloilo City’s Rabiya Mateo was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2020, Gumabao said she already “knew who won last night.”
Despite the incident, Gumabao said he proceeded with the contest after receiving encouragement from a fellow candidate.
“I knew that in no time we would crown the winner and it would all be over and I could go home. I came down and, for the last time, I told myself that I should smile for the show, for the cameras, ”he said.
But finally, Gumabao said that “the news of the winner has already leaked online.”
The host of the contest, KC Montero, previously revealed that five different candidates were filmed with the crown when they filmed the night of the coronation.
“At that point, I realized that for nine months I kept putting this journey first, I kept putting this organization first. And it was my time to put myself first. And I did, ”Gumabao said.
Gumabao also explained the reason for his absence in the photo of the top five candidates.
He said he told the organizers of his plan to leave early after experiencing anxiety and even received permission from one of the contest directors.
“I told him my reason. I told him I was leaving. I told them everything. He said it was fine. He said he was worried about social networks and what everyone would think, and I told him not to worry and that I would take care of everything, “he said, remembering his message to Gaffud.
“I sent a message to our winner, congratulated her and told her why I am leaving. She replied, ‘Thank you,’ ”she continued.
After rumors circulated about her absence in the photo of the top five candidates, Gumabao admitted to being saddened that the Miss Universe Philippines Organization did not defend her despite knowing the reason for her early departure from the pageant.
“When people talked about me leaving and not being part of that photo, the organization knew why, they knew my reasons, they knew that I was leaving but they never said anything. They were silent, ”he said.
Gumabao continued to lament the “toxic” fashion show industry and reminded the public of responsible use of social media.
“I couldn’t believe that people were capable of such things, that we are in this beauty pageant uniting for our dreams, because we want to empower people, but it is very toxic. The industry, the fans, the aggressors, the critics, everything is so toxic, and I couldn’t believe it, ”Gumabao said.
“We should stop hitting. We should stop spreading lies and negativity. Even though we are free to speak with our hearts and minds and share our passions on a certain topic, it does not mean that it is okay to tear down and tear down people, ”he added.
