Another lawyer with experience in information technology (IT) joined the ranks of the Electoral Commission (Comelec) as one of its commissioners.

In a press release issued Monday, Comelec President Sheriff M. Abas praised the nomination of Michael Braganza Peloton to become one of its commissioners, replacing Comelec Commissioner Luie Tito F. Guia, who was withdrew last February.

Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea informed Comelec of Peloton’s nomination last Thursday. Peloton previously served as a board member for the Philippine Reclamation Authority.

“Commissioner Peloton is a timely addition to the full Commission, as his vast experience in the field of law and information technology will greatly contribute to our drive to further improve and revolutionize our electoral processes,” said Abas .

Among Comelec’s incumbent commissioners, only Comelec commissioner Marlon Casquejo, who is a lawyer and computer engineer by profession, has IT experience.

Comelec has already started its preparation for the automated national and local elections of 2022.

Comelec spokesman James Jiménez explained that since Peloton’s new appointment was made during the regular session of Congress, it must first obtain approval from the Appointments Committee.

“He cannot take office immediately. It must first be confirmed by the Appointments Committee, ”said Jiménez.

“Compare this to an interim appointment, held while Congress is not in session. Such a designated person can assume the position immediately, subject to subsequent confirmation from the CA ”, he added.
