The mayors of Metro Manila want quarantine restrictions in the National Capital Region (NCR) to be eased after the Christmas holidays.

The main executor of the government’s national policy on Covid-19, Carlito G. Galvez, said that this was the call of the Metro Manila Council to the Inter-Institutional Working Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) regarding the possible Community ranking for the National Capital Region (NCR) next month.

“There is a recommendation in case there is a relaxation of [quarantine] restriction, it should be next year after the holidays, ”said Gálvez.

Currently, NCR remains under General Community Quarantine (GCQ), the third strictest quarantine classification.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said President Rodrigo R. Duterte is expected to announce the new community quarantine classifications in his public address on Monday.

Local NCR officials are hesitant to relax the restriction for fear it could lead to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Gálvez and the Department of Health (DOH) said the government anticipates a possible increase in infection during the upcoming holidays.

Authorities are now trying to minimize, if not prevent, this expected increase by reminding the public to adhere to minimum health standards during their Christmas celebrations, as well as limiting non-essential movements during the holiday.
