Mercedes-Benz is on the hunt for Nurburgring records. After snatching the title of fastest luxury sedan from Porsche in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, the German marque has set a new Nurburgring lap record – the fastest production car at the Nurburgring. Yes, they managed to beat the record set by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in 2018. Better yet, they even used a front-engined, rear-wheel drive vehicle to do it: the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.
With a 730hp biturbo V8 under the hood and as aerodynamic as a GT3 race car, there is no doubt that the AMG GT Black Series is capable of dominating tracks and tracks like the Nurburgring. Time? A spectacular lap of 6: 43.61, beating the Aventador SVJ by 1.36 seconds. For reference, the previous record holder topped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6: 44.97. It’s not a huge margin, but it’s enough to claim the title of fastest production car in the Green Hell.
Mercedes also did not use a special model to mark the lap. The GT Black series used to set the record is a standard production model vehicle. The engineers only adjusted suspension settings such as camber and anti-roll bars to the most aggressive settings and lowered the car 5mm at the front and 3mm at the rear. The traction control system was also adjusted based on the section of the track. All these functions can be performed on any AMG GT Black Series model.
No special tires were installed either. The record was set on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 MO tires, which are standard Black Series equipment. Inside, the track package option was installed with a roll cage and four-point seat belts to keep the driver safe. Speaking of which, Mercedes-AMG factory driver Maro Engel was behind the wheel during the record-breaking race.
“With speeds of up to almost 270 km / h on the Kesselchen section of the track or over 300 km / h on the long Döttinger Höhe straight, the AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 race car,” he said. Engel.
As the saying goes, records are bound to be broken. The question now is, how long will the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series record last, and which manufacturer will beat it next?
