MANILA Electric Co. (Meralco) said Monday that it paid the P19 million fine imposed by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for complaints of unusually high charges during the lockdown period.

However, the company filed a partial reconsideration motion regarding the ERC’s directive to provide a discount on the retail rate to Lifeline customers, or those with a monthly consumption of 100 kilowatts (kW) or less.

“Pending the resolution of the partial reconsideration motion, Meralco will implement the retail rate discount in its October 2020 billing,” the energy distributor said in a statement.

In August, ERC sanctioned Meralco for violating warnings issued by the regulatory agency during the community quarantine period that began in March.

ERC President and CEO Agnes Devanadera said the company “failed to provide accurate and timely information, especially during this time of pandemic, creating chaos and confusion among electricity consumers.”

The company was also directed to set the distribution, supply and metering charges for life line consumers to zero during the billing cycle of an effective month in the next billing cycle.
