Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is extending its no-disconnect policy until January 31, 2021, according to President Lord Allan Velasco.
This was after Velasco himself requested that Meralco extend its no-disconnect policy in accordance with the “bayanihan” spirit amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“The extended grace period granted to our fellow Filipinos during the Christmas season will provide much-needed respite to those reeling from the devastating effects of the pandemic and natural calamities,” Velasco said in a statement Sunday.
“This good gesture by Meralco will go a long way toward making our Kababayans feel safe this Christmas,” he added.
Velasco wrote to Meralco President Ray Espinosa on November 30, requesting the extension of the no-disconnect policy throughout the Christmas season until the end of January 2021.
Velasco said doing so would help ease the burden on Meralco customers still affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We appreciate that Meralco provided the same courtesy during the height of the national shutdown and we hope the company will be as considerate this holiday season,” Velasco said in his letter.
In response, Espinosa informed Velasco in a December 14 letter that “a careful and considerate evaluation” of his application, Meralco will extend its non-disconnection policy for unpaid invoices from December 31, 2020 to January 31, 2021.
The extended grace period, Espinosa added, will benefit more than three million Meralco customers with a consumption of 200 kilowatts per hour or less during the billing month of December 2020, representing around 47% of its total base. Of customers.
Velasco thanked Espinosa for “showing a true Bayanihan spirit and empathizing with the plight of our homeless compatriots.”
“This is how we overcome the devastating effects of this pandemic, with leaders from the public and private sectors working together to improve life,” he added. —KG, GMA News
