MANILA – Meralco Bolts ended the long reign of San Miguel Beermen as champion of the PBA Philippine Cup after a 90-68 thrashing in their quarterfinal match by knockout at the Cultural and Sports Center of the University Foundation of Angels in Pampanga.

The Bolts defeated the Beermen early on, holding them to just 11 points in the first quarter and quickly opening a double-digit margin that would skyrocket to 28 points.

Meralco definitely walked away after losing 32 points in the third quarter.

Cliff Hodge and Baser Amer each scored 14 points for the Bolts, who reached the Philippine Cup semifinals for the first time and became the 16th team to completely overcome a two-shot deficit in the playoffs.

They will next play Barangay Geneva in the semi-finals, a rematch of last year’s Governor’s Cup Finals.

Mo Tautuaa and Marcio Lassiter each scored 20 markers for the Beermen, who missed June Mar Fajardo throughout bubble season and Terrence Romeo the rest of the way, as they viewed their dominance as the “kings of all Filipinos” that lasted five the years come to an end. (PNA)
