Megawide Construction Corp. offers to retain current employees of Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) should it win the massive privatization deal to modernize the country’s main air gateway.
Megawide, a construction company that branched out into infrastructure projects, is rejecting what it calls “unsubstantiated rumors and innuendo” following reports that thousands of airport employees will be laid off.
In a statement, the company promised to follow the proper process with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), the government entity that currently operates Naia.
Megawide president and CEO Edgar Saavedra also pointed to his conduct when he took over the operations of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) six years ago.
“In fact, we made an offer to 100 percent of the employees listed by the MCIAA not only to comply with government regulations, but because we saw value in their talent and inherent knowledge of the airport,” Saavedra said in a statement, referring to the Mactan Zebu. International Airport Authority.
“As the only company to deliver a first world Philippine airport, MCIA, in the last decade for the Philippines, we are committed to boosting economic activities in the country by supporting the construction of Philippine government infrastructure,” he added.
Louie Ferrer, Megawide’s managing director of transportation, said in the same statement that the company planned to send job offers to Naia’s organic employees.
Megawide “will prioritize not only MIAA’s organic employees, but also non-organic and contractual employees of the airport complex.”
“Those who accept the offers will enjoy benefits equal to or possibly greater than the benefits they were receiving from MIAA. Employees who transfer to Megawide are also protected against layoffs, layoffs … within a specified period, ”said Ferrer.
Megawide is leading in a Naia privatization bid after a group of conglomerates, the Naia Consortium, withdrew last July.
Megawide’s proposal remains under evaluation. Once accepted, it will undergo a competitive challenge process that will allow rivals to make their own offers.
Megawide wants to transform Naia into a world-class gateway despite the difficult aviation environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
His offer, valued at approximately $ 2 billion, promises the elimination of pre-pandemic congestion in Naia.
The plan calls for the gradual expansion of capacity to about 65 million passengers a year. Before the pandemic, Naia was struggling with more than 45 million passengers a year, up from its current design capacity of 31 million a year. INQ
