The Avengers will reunite again sometime, but who will utter that battle cry next time?
The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a mystery. Sure, fans know which movies they’ll catch between now and 2022. And there’s also a growing list of Disney + series to look forward to. But Phase 4 marks the first time that the MCU will operate from a very different location.
After Thanos raised the stakes to the entire universe, the aftermath of “The Snap” will undoubtedly reverberate in the MCU for a while. Spider-Man: away from home I already offered a first look at what a post-Avengers Endgame The world could look like this. But there is also the team itself to consider.
The most powerful heroes on Earth lost their two leaders in “Avengers: Endgame”
Throughout the first three phases of the MCU, the Avengers had a fairly clear leadership structure. Captain America (Chris Evans) was the de facto leader, in charge of the team’s strategy and motivation. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) was the team’s main benefactor and technological innovator. Together, the two men proved to be the heart of the Avengers and the MCU.
So the fact that Avengers Endgame The two finished stories leave a considerable gap in the most powerful heroes on Earth. The two heroes who shaped the Avengers are officially out of rotation. And none of the remaining four original members is capable or willing to ascend to a leadership role. That means the MCU will have to look elsewhere in Phase 4 and beyond.
The Avengers will likely promote from within. Captain America and Iron Man were as loved by fans as by other characters. So we can’t imagine an incoming hero like Shang-Chi coming to take over the Avengers anytime soon. Instead, let’s take a look at some of the characters who are likely to complete the Avengers lineup when Avengers 5 roll around.
The next generation of the Avengers team is already shaping up well
First off, various lifelong heroes have new successors waiting on the wings. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will become Mighty Thor in Thor: love and thunder. She-Hulk will join the Disney + lineup at some point. And the Hawkeye the series will likely see Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) train Kate Bishop as his replacement. But none of those heroes is in a position to lead yet.
Then there are the supporting players who have often worked alongside the main Avengers. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) will become the new Captain America in The falcon and the winter soldier. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are back in WandaVision. And Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is sure to take on a bigger role in the future.
The next Avengers leader will likely be a more central figure in the MCU, probably with his own franchise. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) offer excellent support, but they are not candidates to lead the Avengers. Either Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) or Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) would be a good choice, but not an ideal one.
Captain Marvel and Spider-Man could compete for leadership in Phase 4
Whoever leads the Avengers will, in essence, be the centerpiece of the MCU for a time. Doctor Strange will be absolutely an essential factor in the future, but his mystical focus deviates somewhat from the Avengers’ primary jurisdiction. Black Panther would be an even better route, especially with his $ 1.3 billion solo hit, but his story feels tied to Wakanda right now.
We have no doubts that Doctor Strange and Black Panther will fight alongside the Avengers, probably even joining the team lineup. But the role of the leader of the Avengers will probably fall on one of the two characters: Spider-Man (Tom Holland) or Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Both have the moral strength and goodwill of the audience to make a strong argument as to why they should lead.
However, Spider-Man lacks the experience to lead Earth’s mightiest Heroes into battle. The MCU webslinger is still early in his career, after all. But Captain Marvel has decades of cosmic battle experience, an incredibly impressive set of powers, and the heart to take over the Avengers. His name even leans his hand in his favor. Then we would say that the MCU is yours to send.
