MANILA, Philippines – It’s a bit like “Toxic” turned into an electronic dance backed by the soft vocals of the Backstreet Boys.

“Matches,” the sneaky, surprise collaboration between ’90s pop icons Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys was released on December 11 to the delight of its fans.

“’Matches’ with my friends @backstreetboys is now available !!!! I’m so excited to hear what you think about our song together, ”Britney wrote as the caption with a cover photo of the 2020 reissue of her 2016 album” Glory. “The photo shows Britney in a gold one-piece swimsuit. single piece that is just coming to an end and lies on a chain on a sandy shore.

“Matches” has traces of Britney’s “Toxic” track for a fraction of a second. The song is not like the one from the 90s where a complete choreography with all the dance steps. Instead, it’s more of a head-shaking, foot-bumping, and shoulder-shaking track that one can tune into while jogging or running in town or in some park after work. It also uses the voices of Britney and BSB, who can make more somber pop ballads. It’s shorter too, at just 2 minutes and 52 seconds.

However, not all fans are enthusiastic about the single, as some were disappointed.

“You can say this ‘song’ was removed … It’s not good. Too short and rebuilt,” wrote one Billy Ramey in the comment section of Britney’s post on IG. “LOL Britney herself would never have thrown this.”

Another posted, “Britney, is it really you?”

But most were happy because they all agreed that their childhood dreams came true. They also supported Britney’s music even after two decades of an up-and-down battle for the pop star.
