Mark Caguioa made history when he entered the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup match of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel against Meralco Bolts on Sunday night.
The 40-year-old coach replaced 6:35 to play and with everything resolved. That then formally marked his 18th season in the league.
According to the league’s chief statistician, Fidel Mangonon III, that’s now the most seasons of all time for a PBA career with just one baseball club.
The 2012 MVP surpassed the 17 seasons spent by the great Alvin Heritage of all time with Purefoods and by Harvey Carey with TNT.
Caguioa finished with two points, increasing his career points to 10,173, in a 105-91 victory. Barangay also remained perfect in the bubble after three games.
Coach Tim Cone is proud and happy that Caguioa is making history. For him, Caguioa has been one of the most charming players he has been with.
“I don’t think I was close to a player with whom I was so happy.
“It’s a pleasure to be around Mark. Always has a cheerful disposition. He’s always awake, he’s never mad, he’s never mad. “ he said.
“He just has that kind of personality. His companions adore him, he does not demand anything. With his past history and who he is, he could really demand. But it does not. He’s a really good guy. ” continued the coach 22 times champion.
But what Cone greatly admires about the decorated guard is his leadership in the Barangay, especially in the youth.
“It’s great to have him on the team, number one. He has a really strong leadership presence on our team. “ he said. “Having him around is incredible.
“We just enjoy that Mark is here and is part of the team and leads.[ing] young boys. Talk a lot with [the rookies] Jerrick [Balanza] and Arvin [Tolentino] and Kent [Salado]. “
