MANILA, Philippines – The Manila city government may offer free Covid-19 swab tests for students attending face-to-face classes at local medical schools, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said on Friday.

Moreno said he would prefer that students have swab tests while attending physical classes for their peace of mind.

“The city of Manila, we have three machines and two laboratories. We can offer [swab test] regularly. Just to put your mind at ease (for your peace of mind), we can put them through swab testing and it can be available for free so that it doesn’t add costs to students, ”he said in an interview with ABS- CBN News Channel.

The mayor said this following the approval of the Manila city government for the University of Santo Tomás to resume limited face-to-face classes for its related health and medical programs.

Moreno said that the local government unit (LGU) will also receive applications from other universities and schools that offer medical programs in the city to carry out face-to-face classes.

The approval of the Manila LGU of the UST proposal comes after President Rodrigo Duterte allowed the resumption of limited face-to-face classes for medical and related health programs in institutions located in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) and areas of Modified GCQ.

The move was intended to ensure that the country had enough doctors amid the pandemic, according to presidential spokesman Harry Roque.
