MANILA, Philippines – Manila ChooksTM failed to advance to the knockout stage after losing two games in the group stage of the Fiba 3 × 3 Doha World Tour Masters 2020 on Friday at the Al Gharafa Sports Complex in Qatar.

Filipino representatives fell to world number 1 Liman 15-22 (7:38) in his first game and failed to secure victory against local team Lusail, 14-19.

Lusail’s victory was considered a surprise as the Doha team is unqualified, but had 6-foot-10 giant Souley Ndour, who had his way with 10 points and seven rebounds against Manila.

The smallest size of ChooksTM, with Troy Rike tallest at 6ft 8in, proved to be disadvantageous with Lusail fielding the 6ft7 Senegalese Ousseynou Mbow, 6ft6 Greek Kostas Vasileiadis and 6ft Qatari 5 Hamza Maher.

“There are no excuses,” Joshua Munzon said after the loss to Lusail.

Liman swept Group A with their two victories over Lusail (21-8) and Manila.

The world’s number one team, however, had to suppress the ChooksTM rally in their match as Munzon rallied from Manila from a 5-12 deficit to get to one, 13-14, with 4:16 to play.

Liman eventually turned to 6-foot-6 greats Mihailo Vasic and Stefan Kojic, who had seven points each, to secure victory.

Alvin Pasaol struggled throughout the tournament with just six total points for the two games, while Santillán and Ride amassed four and two points, respectively.
