MANILA – PAGASA warned of flooding on Sunday as the water level at the Magat and Angat dams continued to rise due to rains brought by two low pressure areas.
The Magat dam operator opened a gate at 1 meter starting at 9 am Sunday, according to PAGASA. The water discharge would likely affect the towns of Ramón, San Mateo, Aurora, Cabatuan, Luna, Reina Mercedes, Burgos, Naguilian and Gamu, he added.
The channels of the Cagayan river are also “above the alert level,” which can cause flash floods due to accumulation of water, according to the office’s hydrometeorology division.
“The entire stretch of the Cagayan river, including the main tributaries, is likely to increase in the next 12 hours,” PAGASA said.
The Angat dam operator also issued a flood precaution as “a lot of rain is definitely expected in the next 24 hours” in the dam’s catchment area due to altered weather.
The LPAs are not likely to turn into tropical depressions, but they will bring rainfall across large swaths of the country, the meteorological office previously said.
The provinces of Cagayan and Isabela were severely flooded during the onslaught of Typhoon Ulises in November.
