CEBU CITY, Philippines – The 14 M / V Good Fortune crew members who sent a distress signal as they sailed through the waters off east Bohol on Sunday, October 25, are safe and unharmed, authorities announced.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in its latest incident report issued at 4 pm Sunday, said that the entire crew of the cargo ship, owned and operated by Tektite Shipping, were in good physical condition.

The M / V Good Fortune has been anchored in the vicinity of Lapinig Island in the town of President Carlos P. Garcia in Bohol, where crew members are repairing the engine.

“While underway, the PCG maintains active and direct communication with the ship’s captain to ensure that the entire crew remains safe and sound until further assistance is provided,” PCG said in its report.

PCG also reported that they would conduct operations to check for signs of an oil spill in nearby areas.

“Immediately, the PCG deployed MCS-3005 from Customs Wharf, Cebu City to conduct search and rescue operations, as well as to inspect possible oil spill incidents,” they said.

The freighter, bound for the city of Tacloban in Leyte, was carrying around 1,630 tons of cement from the city of Naga, Cebu.

However, while sailing through the waters of the sea in Bohol on Sunday at noon, the strong wind and waves hit the ship, causing a malfunction and engine failure.

As a result, the vessel began to ingest water, prompting its crew to issue a distress signal around 12 p.m. or noon on Sunday. One of its members also took to social media to ask for help.

PCG said its staff assigned to stations and substations in Leyte and Bohol were instructed to prepare for a possible deployment to assist in their response. / dbs
