Luka Doncic leads Giannis Antetokounmpo as betting favorite to win NBA MVP

Luka Doncic has parted ways with Giannis Antetokounmpo and emerged as the consensus favorite to win the NBA regular season MVP in US sportsbooks, and punters are flocking to the young superstar of the Dallas Mavericks.

On November 10, Doncic and Antetokounmpo opened as co-favorites +550 on William Hill’s Caesars Sportsbook. Since then, Doncic has attracted twice the stakes, and twice the money, than any other player to become the solo favorite at +450.

Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks’ two-time reigning regular season MVP, has dropped a notch back to +500, followed by Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry (+750) and Lakers stars Anthony Davis ( +800) and LeBron James (+850). Doncic has drawn more bets on William Hill than Antetokounmpo, Davis and James combined.

At sports betting operator PointsBet, one in three bets placed has been on Doncic, who capped an outstanding second NBA season with an electrifying playoff performance in the Orlando bubble.

“I thought I should have finished better than last year in the [MVP] voting, “said Jeff Sherman, a veteran NBA bettor for the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas.

Sherman said New Orleans Pelicans second-year forward Zion Williamson has also been drawing support from bettors, causing his MVP odds to move from 80-1 to 50-1 in the SuperBook.

Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young has also been generating interest from the sportsbooks. Young’s odds have dropped from 200-1 to 50-1 on the SuperBook, and William Hill reported betting $ 1,000 on Young for MVP with odds of 100-1.

“Our biggest liability so far is in [Charlotte Hornets rookie] LaMelo Ball at 5,000-1, “Sherman said.
