MANILA, Philippines – Cumulus clouds to the east of the country have become a low pressure area (LPA), which state meteorologists expect to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the next 12 hours.

However, meteorological forecasts from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Wednesday afternoon showed that the LPA, located 1,025 kilometers southeast of Mindanao, is not likely to become a tropical cyclone. .

Still, Pagasa said, the LPA will bring rains over Mindanao, Visayas and even parts of southern Luzon, including the Bicol region, starting Thursday through the weekend.

On Tuesday, Pagasa’s climatology division predicted the formation of the LPA based on models created after cloud bands began to appear in the Pacific Ocean. However, Pagasa also noted that the probability of storms for the rest of 2020 remains low.

But even before the LPA enters PAR, Pagasa said cloudy skies and rain would still be felt in several areas due to existing weather systems, such as the northeast or amihan monsoon and the end of a frontal system.

From Wednesday night to Thursday morning, there will be light to moderate rains with sometimes heavy rains in Visayas, the Bicol region, Mimaropa and Quezon province due to the frontal system, according to the state meteorological office.

The eastern parts of Mindanao will be affected by the depression or the spread of the LPA, meaning cloudy weather with isolated storms will prevail for the next 12 hours, he said.

Northern Luzon and the eastern parts of central Luzon will experience light to moderate rainfall, while the northern part of Cagayan will see occasional heavy rains due to amihan, which can cause flooding in the Cagayan Valley and potential landslides in the Administrative Region. from Cordillera, he also said.

Meanwhile the weather would be a bit cooler in the monsoon affected areas with Tuguegarao temperatures possibly dropping to around 22-27 degrees Celsius as the weather in Laoag will be 26-29 degrees Celsius, Baguio 15-23 degrees Celsius and Legazpi at 26 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Metro Manila will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies, as temperatures would also drop to 23 degrees Celsius, Pagasa noted.

Some areas in Visayas and Mindanao may also experience cold weather due to the frontal system and the LPA channel. According to Pagasa, Tacloban can register temperatures of 24 to 30 degrees Celsius while Davao will have them between 23 and 31 degrees Celsius. The climate of Cebu will be 26 to 31 degrees Celsius and Zamboanga will be 25 to 34 degrees Celsius.

Gale warnings are still raised in northern Luzon, particularly on the coastlines of Cagayan, Batanes, the Babuyan islands and the entire coast of the Ilocos region, Pagasa said. Sea conditions in these areas will be difficult, the state meteorological office noted, as waves can reach heights of 2.8 to 4.5 meters.

Pagasa said that small boats cannot navigate these areas as sea travel can be risky.
