A low pressure area (LPA) entered the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday as tropical storm “Siony” weakened, the Philippine Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
The LPA east of Mindanao entered the PAR at 2 p.m., Pagasa said.
Estimated 955 kilometers east of Visayas, the LPA is forecast to move generally west-northwest or northwest toward Eastern Visayas and is likely to arrive in the region on Saturday afternoon.
“This alteration of the climate can become [a] the tropical depression now called ‘Tonyo’ within the next 36 hours, “the weather agency said.
Siony continues to move west-northwest and is expected to be over the Bashi Canal in southern Taiwan by Saturday morning and over the Western Philippine Sea, it said in its severe weather bulletin at 5 pm Friday.
At 4 pm, Pagasa said that Siony was estimated to be 90 miles west-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, moving west-northwest at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour (kph).
It has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 115 kilometers per hour, he said.
“The tropical storm is forecast to maintain its strength for the next 12 hours, then significantly weaken due to increasingly unfavorable conditions associated with increased northeast winds over WPS. It can be downgraded to a low pressure area on Sunday afternoon, ”Pagasa said.
Siony will bring light to moderate rains with sometimes heavy rains over Babuyan and Batanes Islands, now under the No. 1 signal.
The LPA trough will bring light to moderate scattered with heavy rains at times over Mindanao, eastern and central Visayas and the Bicol region, Pagasa said.
