Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 7) – A low pressure area (LPA) east of eastern Samar is expected to turn into a tropical depression and drench parts of the country on Saturday, the state meteorological office said.
According to the PAGASA 4pm weather bulletin, the LPA was last located 75 km northeast of Borongan city, eastern Samar. Moderate to heavy rains, sometimes intense, will be experienced in the Bicol, North Samar, East Samar and Samar regions.
Meanwhile, light to moderate, sometimes heavy rains are expected in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, the rest of Visayas and Mindanao. He added that the rains can cause floods and landslides.
PAGASA also warned against sea travel on the north coasts of Quezon and Camarines Norte, the north coast of Camarines Sur, the north and east coasts of Catanduanes and the east coasts of Albay (including the Rapu-Rapu islands), Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, Dinagat and Siargao Islands due to rough waters.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) called on regional DRRMCs on Saturday not to take the LPA lightly and to ensure that preparedness measures are being implemented.
The LPA may intensify into a tropical depression within the next 36 hours and will be called “Tonyo,” the agency said, adding that the lowest storm watch may be raised once it becomes a tropical depression. The weather disturbance continues to move to the west-northwest and may reach eastern Visayas by Saturday afternoon.
The LPA entered the country’s monitoring area on Friday afternoon, while Severe Tropical Storm Siony left the Philippine area of responsibility at 12 a.m. on Saturday.
