Lorenzana apologizes to the vice president for incorrect information on the use of airplanes

MANILA, Philippines – Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has apologized to Vice President Leni Robredo for wrongly reporting that she boarded a Philippine Air Force C-130 aircraft to Catanduanes.

Robredo contested a claim by the presidential chief legal adviser, Salvador Panelo, that he used a government-owned C-130 aircraft when he visited his home region of Bicol to send relief aid to typhoon survivors. Panelo said his basis was Lorenzana’s report.

“I asked the Philippine Air Force to confirm me through their flight manifest and they informed me that there was no case that Vice President Robredo boarded a military plane to go to Catanduanes,” Lorenzana said.

However, a flight manifesto showed that a Huey helicopter flew relief items from Robredo’s office in the city of Legazpi, Albay, to Catanduanes on November 3.

Panelo claimed that the vice president went to Catanduanes using a C-130 filled with relief items to claim credit for the relief operation.

But what about the country’s second-tallest leader on a government jet in the first place? There are none, the Philippine Armed Forces said.

“There is no problem in that as far as the AFP is concerned,” said AFP spokesman Major General Edgard Arevalo, speaking in Filipino.

“What is needed is adequate coordination or information in advance,” he said.
