Look for this PS5 logo if you are still shopping for PS4 games

It’s a tough time for PS4 owners looking to be first in line for a PS5 when stocks arrive. We don’t have a confirmed price or release date yet (although we have an idea for the latter), so what do you do if you want more games in the meantime? Microsoft has Xbox Smart Delivery, which allows you to play the best version of the game regardless of whether you’re using an Xbox One X / S or an Xbox Series X / S, but Sony’s plans are a bit more fragmented.

In short, Sony has left the decision of how next-gen updates are handled to the game’s own publishers, and it’s pretty inconsistent. While Cyberpunk 2077 and Destiny 2 will provide free updates from PS4 to PS5, others like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War are much more complicated. Then there’s an entire subset that presumably won’t offer any updates on PS5, so how do you know which is which?

Well, thanks to Ubisoft, now we have an idea of how the publishers will warn you. VGC spotted a small logo on the bottom of the upcoming Immortals Fenyx Rising PS4 game box showing their future-friendly credentials. “PS5 update available,” reads a small box next to the age rating.

It’s much more subtle than the Xbox equivalent, as two Ubisoft boxes side by side demonstrate.

But it is worth remembering that this is out of necessity. Microsoft bets on the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles as part of the same family, in the same way that the PC gaming community covers everyone from RTX 3080 owners to those who play Peggle on their work laptops. The little black bar at the top explains which consoles the game runs on, but it makes sense to highlight that owners are gaining something by buying the latest and greatest hardware anyway.
