LIVE: Hearing in the Senate on the Dito franchise

MANILA, Philippines – The Senate Public Services Committee holds a hearing Monday on the renewal of the Dito Telecommunity Corp. franchise.
Dito used to be known as the Mindanao Islamic Telephone Company, Inc., Mislatel.
Aiming to inject competition into the telecommunications industry, Dito has been conducting a user-friendly test in controlled environments in preparation for a planned commercial launch in March 2021.
The company said in October that it had already installed 1,532 cell towers and expected to have installed more than 2,000 by the end of the year.
“Hopefully we can achieve that so that we can offer broader coverage to the public,” Rodolfo Santiago, director of technology for Dito Telecommunity, told reporters in an online briefing that month.
At that level, Santiago said that Dito can safely cover between 47% and 49% of the population, well above the 37% required by the regulations in its first year.
