Kidlat Tahimik tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The Baguio-based National Artist revealed the news in a Facebook post on the Baguio Chronicles page on Sunday, saying he felt the need to openly state his case after being active at the Ibagiw Festival last month.
“On December 11, a routine swab test at the Triage at the Baguio Convention Center diagnosed this National Artist as COVID-19 POSITIVE,” he wrote.
According to the National Artist, he is currently in a “self-imposed quarantine” and “is visited daily by a multitude of doctors. These health officials dressed in PPE come in an ambulance to monitor my temperature, my oxygen count, my shortness of breath. “. , my BP, “he wrote.
His self-quarantine came after the third edition of the Ibagiw Festival last month.
With the theme Breath Baguio, the festival was meant to “promote Baguio as a seaside resort and cultural center in the north,” Kidlat said.
“For five weeks, Baguio became a town full of works of art and artisan exhibitions,” he added.
Kidlat also pointed out how Baguio became a model for LGU for pandemic management after the strict social distancing protocols of its mayor Benjie Magallong.
He said Ibagiw “was meant to show that Baguio was on the road to recovery.”
“With the success of IBAGIW, the artists showed that our city in the mountains can have their cake and eat it too. The curated art festival mounted in the time of COVID-19 was conceived by the artists as a kind of vaccine for souls locked in Baguio “he wrote.
Kidlat felt the need to state his case as he had been very active during Ibagiw, “present at the Baguio Convention Center almost every day, guiding visitors and forcing visitors to take a selfie with the artist” .
Kidlat said: “Sadly, you may have had face mask security flaws, posing for a selfie without a mask.”
“Without realizing it, I could have been exposed to the coronavirus. In turn, this would be of concern to those of you who were exposed to me,” he added.
“For any of you who have been exposed to my presence during the festival, please take precautions and monitor your health. Just in case!” Kidlat said.
Since his swab test, everyone he had close contact with has cleaned themselves. “So far, all have been diagnosed negative,” said the National Artist.
His reveal came with a bit of self-reflection. According to Kidlat, he was playfully ending his emails since the closings began in March with: “Today, don’t forget the 11th Commandment !!!” Followed by ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s COVID’. Signed: Kidlat Tahimik “.
“Na karma ba si Kidlat Tahimik?” I ask. “Had I been too frivolous about this health issue? Yes, it was meant to be funny (patawa) in tone. But, it was a very serious warning to my friends to please stay safe.”
“If you have not had any signs of fever or loss of appetite or fatigue, you need not worry. Please stay safe. – Kidlat Tahimik (Baguio National Artist),” he finished his note.
