Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he has every intention of signing a new contract with Mercedes once the titles have been closed.
The six-time world champion, at the wheel of the W11, achieved a career-record 92 victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix and it seems that few things can stop him on his way to a seventh World Championship, or even an eighth.
Perhaps nothing from Hamilton himself.
It’s strange to think that Mercedes has yet to agree on new terms beyond 2020 with its prized asset, although team boss Toto Wolff has consistently said that it has been due to not being able to find the right time to discuss and finalize a new contract. .
But more importantly, Hamilton says his journey with Mercedes “is definitely not over.”
“Naturally, I think that already last year, in Hungary last year I think that Toto [Wolff] I was talking about signing a contract, ”Hamilton told Sky Sports.
“Of course the pandemic was not then and you look back and think that maybe I should have signed it then. But the thing is, I think things happen at the right time and I was definitely not mentally ready at the time.
“I wanted to give myself the space mentally to really think about what I want to do, to think if there are any adjustments for me and the team, how can we get more out of each other, how can I give them an easier time.
“I definitely don’t think it’s over. I want to continue. I think once we do the work and the stress of the bubble and everything passes, we can get to whatever position we need to be comfortable or uncomfortable in and we will do so in order to continue.
“I still want to keep running, but I don’t know how much longer.
“It definitely won’t be long before I stop, so this is a period of time where I have to slowly figure out what the future holds.
“It’s brilliant, whatever I decide to do, but it also has to be aligned with the times, it has to be aligned with my values and it has to be aligned with what the team plans to do.
“All I can say is that I plan to be here next year.”

Hamilton spoke of how when he left McLaren for Mercedes in 2013 he felt his voice finally being heard, while over the years he learned to become a leader that he couldn’t be in his youth.
“When I was younger, they obviously didn’t always listen to me,” he explained.
“When I joined this team, I had all these ideas. I looked at the car they had with Michael [Schumacher] and with nico [Rosberg], and I thought this has to change, and this has to change. I changed a lot of things and they listened to me, and so they continued together.
“When you are 22, you are young and enthusiastic, but you don’t necessarily have the maturity. At the time I was young, I didn’t know what to say yes and no to, and I didn’t know how to be a team leader. What did 22 years ago?
“Now I am part of this incredible team, we are leaders together.
“We challenge each other and I know that when I listen to strategists in the morning, I know what parts I need to digest, what questions to ask, and when I’m on the track I know how far I can go and how far I’m going to go. the experience “.
