Leonen did not attend the banc session last week because he was on welfare leave.

Sources at The Manila Times said the judges are awaiting Leonen’s ruling on how he will handle the impeachment case brought to the House of Representatives.

Leonen was charged with betraying the public trust and guilty violation of the Constitution for allegedly failing to file his asset, liability, and net worth returns for 15 years and sitting on cases for years.

Senator Ana Theresia Hontiveros said the filing of the complaint was “unnecessary and counterproductive.”

The senator said Tuesday that the decision to impeach Leonen was “a distraction that will only drag lawmakers and the public into a senseless political fiasco.”

He said the government should focus on helping Filipinos affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s battered economy.

“I think we need to ask ourselves: who will benefit the most from this impeachment lawsuit? Surely, not the Filipino people, ”Hontiveros said in a statement.

“With all due respect to our colleagues in the House of Representatives, I would like to refocus attention on the thousands of Filipinos who are bedridden or have lost loved ones due to the Covid-19 pandemic, those who have lost their homes due to recent typhoons and those who have lost their livelihoods amid the economic crisis, ”he added.

Leonen said he was confident that the country’s leaders would “do the right thing” in the impeachment demand.

“Given the urgent and pressing needs of our people during this time of crisis, we are confident that our leaders will do the right thing. Certainly, this may not be to address false issues raised for some clearly personal or vengeful reasons, “he said.
