MANILA, Philippines – Tropical depression Leon has intensified into a tropical storm and is expected to reach severe tropical storm status within 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Wednesday.

In its severe weather bulletin at 5 am, Pagasa said that “León” could turn into a typhoon in 48 hours.

The weather disturbance was last detected 225 kilometers northwest of Coron, Palawan. It is moving west-northwest at 10 kilometers per hour (kph) and has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gusts up to 80 kph.

“’Leon’ is forecast to continue moving west-northwest until it leaves the Philippines Area of Responsibility tomorrow morning. Then it is expected to turn west starting tomorrow afternoon and head towards Vietnam, ”Pagasa said.

Currently, there are no signs of tropical cyclone winds anywhere in the country. However, intermittent gusts can be experienced over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Palawan (including Kalayaan, Calamian, and Cuyo Islands), Mindoro, Romblon, and Western Visayas provinces.

For this Wednesday, Pagasa said “Leon” and the southwest monsoon will bring moderate to heavy rains over Aurora, Rizal, Palawan (including the Kalayaan, Calamian and Cuyo islands), the provinces of Mindoro, Romblon, Western Visayas and Negros Oriental.

Meanwhile, light to moderate and occasionally heavy rains will be experienced in the Bicol region, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Metro Manila, Isabela, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and the rest of Central Luzon, Calabarzon , Mimaropa and Visayas.

“Rain-induced flooding and landslides can occur during heavy or prolonged rains, especially in areas that are very or very susceptible to these hazards,” Pagasa said.

The gale warning is currently in effect over the western shores of Palawan (including Calamian and Kalayaan Islands) and Occidental Mindoro (including Lubang Island) due to rough to very rough seas (2.8 to 4.5 meters). Pagasa said sea travel is risky in these areas.

Meanwhile, the moderate to rough sea (1.2 to 3.1 meters) will prevail over the northern, eastern and southern coasts of Luzon, and the Visayas and Mindanao coasts. The meteorological office advised fishermen and those with small boats to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea in these areas.
