MANILA, Philippines – Interior Undersecretary and spokesman Jonathan Malaya said on Friday left-wing groups verbally abused the prison escorts who accompanied and secured political detainee Queen Mae Nasino at her son’s wake.
“The BJMP [Bureau of Jail Management and Penology] The jail officers assigned to escort Nasino were insulted, harassed and verbally abused by left-wing groups aligned with Ms. Nasino. In fact, it was the left wing groups that caused the tension during the wake when they suddenly took their anger out on the BJMP officers who were doing their job., “ Malaya said in a statement.
Malaya also accused left-wing groups of “grabbing the headlines” during the wake.
“What was supposed to be a solemn occasion for a mother to peacefully mourn her daughter’s death was intentionally turned into a media spectacle at the clear instigation of these leftist groups., ” he said.
“We commiserate and sympathize with Ms. Nasino and respect her right to mourn her daughter’s death. However, we condemn in the strongest terms the acts of these left-wing groups that put the safety of Ms. Nasino and the lives of our prison officials at risk., “ Malaya added.
The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) previously revealed that it will file cases against BJMP staff over the tension that erupted while Nasino was at the wake.
NUPL said prison guards prevented Nasino from responding to media inquiries.
Nasino’s son was buried in the Manila North Cemetery on Friday afternoon.
