MANILA, Philippines – A lawyer on Friday asked former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to apologize to people whose lives he “recklessly endangered” because of his recent statement allegedly linking people to the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

“In today’s political climate, being labeled red is like being placed on an order of battle or having your name included on a death sentence. Senator Trillanes should immediately correct this inexcusable mistake and apologize to all those whose lives he has recklessly endangered, ”attorney Rommel Bagares said in an interview.

On Thursday, Trillanes said that he and former Magdalo congressman Gary Alejano presented a communication with the ICC about President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs before left-wing groups.

In his statement, Trillanes mentioned that “Bagares and the CPP / NPA / NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New Popular Army-National Democratic Front) groups presented their communications with the ICC only between mid-to-late 2018.”

But Bagares denied having submitted an ICC communication on behalf of the communist group.

“I never presented a communication with the ICC for and on behalf of the CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front),” he said.

“[I]”It is irresponsible for Mr. Trillanes and his staff to even accuse the majority people of being communists, at a time when people identified as such are being killed, and it does not matter if they are lawyers, doctors or human rights workers”, said. additional.

Meanwhile, former Bayan Muna representative Teddy Casiño criticized Trillanes for allegedly red-labeling the families of EJK victims, who filed a communication with the ICC in 2018.

“It was the mothers and relatives of EJK victims of Duterte’s war on drugs who came before the ICC through the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL). Please don’t label them red, ”Casiño told the former senator on Twitter.

But Trillanes, in response, said: “I did not mention in my tweet that the mothers of the victims are CPP / NPA / NDF. I think they are not communists. How sure are you that the CPP / NPA / NDF did not present any other communication with the ICC, are you in contact with them? “

In response, Bayan Muna’s former solon said that as far as he knows, it was only Trillanes, the mothers of EJK victims assisted by NUPL, and various human rights groups who presented ICC communications on the war on drugs.

“You (Trillanes) are the one who alleges that the CPP-NPA-NDF did it too. Please don’t shift the burden of trying this on me, ”added Casiño.

‘Family of EJK Victims, Non-Communist Bagares’

Trillanes responded to Casiño and said that it was based on his “impeccable intelligence sources” that the CPP presented a communication.

“[B]But let me say categorically that the mothers of EJK victims are not communists, ”he emphasized.

In a separate tweet, Trillanes also denied linking Bagares to the communist movement.

“First, let me clarify that Atty. Bagares is not a communist. I never said that in my tweet, “he said.
