MANILA, Philippines – “May I find peace of mind.”
Such was the message from attorney Virginia Suárez, a lawyer for Jennifer Laude’s family, about the deportation of US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton, who brutally murdered Jennifer in 2014.
“Hoping that he has learned from all this the value of life and dignity regardless of gender and nationality,” Suárez added in his message on Sunday.
“Jennifer’s case is over. But not the poverty and the struggle that the Administration’s incompetence supports to stop Covid and the corruption that continue to plague our nation, ”he also said.
Pemberton left the country Sunday morning, carried by a US military plane that took off at 9:14 a.m., the Immigration Office said.
President Rodrigo Duterte granted Pemberton “absolute pardon” last Monday amid public anger over a court order from the city of Olongapo for the American’s release before completing his six to 10-year prison sentence for the murder of Laude.
