Juliana Morawski has realized that she most likely will not be able to work in an ER again, even if she wanted to. As a 30-year retired emergency nurse, it’s hard to realize that for someone who just wants to lend a hand up front.
But even though she’s not in the ER, Morawski, 69, is working in an Illinois clinic, answering phones and administering Covid-19 vaccines, telling CNN she is comforted to learn that “any thing is better than nothing. “
She said that because of her age and some minor health issues, she believes emergency managers would consider her high risk.
Honestly, I still feel guilty that I can’t help (in the emergency room) because they (the nurses) are so exhausted, “she said.
“They are definitely being hammered and hammered, every day.”
Morawski received a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine last week and said he is looking forward to the second dose next month.
Call to action: In March, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, along with officials from around the world, called for skilled healthcare workers to remove their clothes and return to their trade to help fight on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.
Evelyn Ochoa-Celano, 63, responded to that call despite having retired from the infirmary three months earlier. Unfortunately, a few months later, she herself died of coronavirus.
Ochoa-Celano retired from a city hospital in the Bronx, New York, her son, John Tabaniag told CNN, but was working part-time shifts at a nursing home on Long Island to keep busy.
After Cuomo’s letter came out, Ochoa-Celano called her son to tell him she was returning to full-time work at the nursing home.
As much as Tabaniag was proud of his mother for wanting to fight on the front lines, he was concerned for her health. Having lost his stepfather and younger brother, he feared losing his mother as well.
