Alex Caruso has missed the last two Lakers games and did not travel with the team on his current tour after being ruled out under league health and safety protocols. Head coach Frank Vogel couldn’t provide much more clarity ahead of Caruso’s third straight lost game against the San Antonio Spurs, other than saying he will miss a fourth game when Los Angeles heads to Memphis to play the Grizzlies. on Sunday.
“I am not sure of the exact date when you will be able to meet with us. Obviously, he won’t be available tonight (against Spurs) and the first game in Memphis, I know for sure, ”Vogel said.
Health and safety protocols are an intentionally vague set of rules and guidelines agreed upon by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association, outlining the precautions to take and quarantines to enforce as the league resumes. the game amid the coronavirus pandemic, which is still raging. A player who is out under this designation may means they tested positive for the virus, but as we covered yesterday, that seems unlikely in Caruso’s case, because a) no other Lakers player or staff has been forced to quarantine and second) The league announced Wednesday that no player has tested positive for the virus since Dec. 24.
Unless Caruso tested positive in the last day or so, or the league lies, that would strongly imply that a positive test isn’t what keeps him out. As for what it is, we won’t speculate, but we will say again that wherever it is and whatever is preventing it, hopefully Caruso and his family are healthy and safe.
The Lakers’ next game after Sunday’s showdown with Memphis is another game against the Grizzlies on Tuesday before they return home to host the Spurs for the last time this season the following Thursday.
