Lady Agilas breaks into the quarterfinals
The Philippines capitalized on International Women’s Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda’s miraculous victory over IM Guliskhan Nakhbayeva on board two to lead the team to an impressive 2.5-1.5 win over third-seeded Kazakhstan for a quarter-final spot in the Asian Nations Online Chess Cup 2020 on Monday.
Fronda was one piece down in what looked like a desperate losing position before Nakhbayeva faltered as she lost in time to give the Philippines the much-needed victory.
WIM Bernadette Galas defeated FIDE Woman Master Meruert Kamalidonva on the fourth board, while Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna tied with FM Bibisara Assaubayeva on the first board to seal the match victory.
WFM Shania Mae Mendoza was the only victim after succumbing to the shaky WGM Gulmira Dauletova on the third board.
With the win, Lady Agilas finished with 13 match points for the second team with Iran, but secured the second seed due to a higher score in the tiebreaker.
They arranged a meeting with No. 7 Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals on Friday.
India, who defeated the PH squad in the seventh round, 3-1, lived up to their expectations by ruling the nine-round eliminations with 16 points to set up a duel with No. 8 Kyrgyzstan.
No. 3 Iran faces No. 6 Indonesia, while No. 4 Vietnam faces No. 5 Mongolia.
The impressive victory in the final round came after the Filipinos outlived the Mongols in a 2-2 clash that was decided by Frayna winning by forfeiture against IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul, who was penalized for violating tournament regulations that the video cameras must be on at all times.
Fronda bowed to WIM Bayarjargal Bayarmaa, while Galas and Mendoza halved the point with WFM Davaakhu Munkhul and Boldbaatar Altantuya.
