The mayor of the city of CEBU, Edgardo Labella, underwent surgery in a private hospital after his medical tests showed the presence of stones in the gallbladder.

The operation took place at 10 am on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

Cebu City Attorney Rey Gealon, spokesman for the mayor, announced during a virtual press conference that Labella’s medical procedure had been successful.

The operation lasted about 30 minutes.

“We are pleased to announce that the operation was a success. Thank God, ”Gealon said in Cebuano.

Labella presented a license from September 3 to Monday, September 7.

Gealon said Cebu City Deputy Mayor Michael Rama will serve as acting mayor during Labella’s absence.

However, in a separate interview, Rama said that he has not received any official communication on the matter.

“How can I be acting (mayor) if I don’t have the documentation?” Rama asked, pointing out that an official appointment would make his guess more legitimate.

On Wednesday September 2, Labella announced her gallstone condition in a Facebook post.

“Managing the Cebu City response against Covid-19 had been such a challenging task that I put aside the stomachaches and joint pains I have been experiencing. After undergoing a thorough medical checkup before and for the sake of transparency and In good faith, I would like to inform everyone that I have been diagnosed with gallbladder stones and that I am going to have surgery, ”Labella announced.
