Ko tops LPGA earnings chart for 2020
(Agence France-Presse) – December 22, 2020 – 12:00 am
World No. 1 Ko Jin-young walked away from runner-up Kim Sei-young with five back-nine birdies on Sunday to win the season-ending LPGA Tour Championship by five strokes.
Ko, who was playing her fourth LPGA event of the season interrupted by the pandemic, had only gotten into elite field with a tie for second on Monday at the US Women’s Open.
But the 25-year-old South Korean made the most of her opportunity, shooting seven birdies on her six-under par 66 at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
She rolled in a final birdie on the 72nd hole for a total of 270 under 18 and a convincing victory over Kim and Australian Hannah Green, who shared second with 275.
The winner’s prize of $ 1.1 million, down from $ 1.5 million last year but still the largest in women’s golf in 2020, placed Ko at the top of the list of earnings for the year.
Her $ 1.66 million in earnings in 2020 led her to surpass the $ 5 million mark in her career.
It was the reward for the lonely weeks since he returned to the United States in November, leaving family and friends in South Korea.
