SEOUL – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited typhoon-affected areas in the country’s eastern South Hamkyong province and chaired a Workers’ Party meeting there to discuss recovery efforts, media reported. state on Sunday.

During the meeting, the chairman of the ruling party’s South Hamkyong provincial committee was removed from office for an apparent failure to cope with the typhoon and appointed a new replacement, the KCNA said.
In an open letter sent to party members in Pyongyang, Kim said that around 12,000 elite party members from the capital will be dispatched to the two provinces to help with recovery efforts, according to the KCNA.
Kim’s visit to the typhoon-hit areas is seen to be aimed at highlighting his image as a leader who cares about the lives of his people as they have been recovering from the recent back-to-back natural disasters.
Typhoon Maysak, the ninth tropical storm of the season, hit North Korea as the country is still recovering from damage from another typhoon and heavy downpours that hit its main rice-producing areas in the southwestern province. .
