MANILA, Philippines – Human rights group Karapatan called on Congress to investigate fake China-based Facebook accounts that supported President Rodrigo Duterte, as well as Davao City Mayor and Presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio, and said these accounts could be used to “influence elections in the Philippines.”
“It is important to get to the bottom of these issues to determine the facts behind the possible abuse of social media platforms like Facebook to improperly influence elections in the Philippines and the use of public funds for such activities, as well as the use of government resources. to encourage lies and incite to harm critics of the government, ”Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay said in a statement Saturday.
“If these issues remain unaddressed and if such acts continue, serious doubts about the credibility of the 2022 elections will haunt this supposed democratic exercise,” Palabay added.
Social media giant Facebook removed several fake Facebook accounts and pages last week for “coordinated inauthentic behavior.” Some of the pages and accounts that were removed expressed support for Duterte and the possible presidential candidacy of Duterte-Carpio in 2022.
