MANILA, Philippines – As the Philippines dominated Thailand in the qualifying window for the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup in Bahrain, Kai Sotto was in the United States training with his teammates on the Ignite NBA G League team.
Sotto watched his Gilas teammates rack up two wins in as many games against Thailand in the Manama bubble, but the 7-foot-2 center is hoping to rejoin the national team by the February playoff window.
If your schedule allows.
“To be honest, there is a higher probability that he will play in this next window, but it also depends on the schedule because they said we could have the season next year,” Sotto said Thursday at a virtual press conference.
“It depends on the schedule, but I hope to play in the next window.”
Sotto has yet to play at the senior level, but has represented the Philippines several times at the junior level averaging a double-double of 14.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in all events.
Gilas’ current team is made up of college stars and players who have graduated but have not yet played in professional professional basketball, making Sotto a perfect fit in terms of age and experience.
Gilas is at the top of Group A with a perfect 3-0 record and is ready to play against Indonesia and Korea in the next window.
