Trying to become the first local Filipino player in the NBA has become a modest goal for Kai Sotto when he began training for the NBA’s G-League select team on Wednesday.
Asked by former PBA commissioner Noli Eala on his radio show over the weekend what he hopes to be five years from now, Sotto said he hopes not only to be an NBA All-Star, but also the best in the region. Asian.
“I envision myself being part of a great organization, a great team and I envision myself as an All-Star,” Sotto said on Eala’s Power and Play show on 92.3 News FM.
“I will do everything I can to be an All-Star, to show that I am a great player and that I represent Asia in five years. I want to be the best in Asia too, being a Filipino and representing the Philippines in five years. That is the dream I have, “he added.
The 7-foot-2 native of the city of Las Pinas and former Ateneo high school star acknowledged that the NBA dream is not just for him, knowing that the Filipinos at home support him in his success.
“Every day, I wake up and I always see people sending me messages of ‘Good luck Kai, we support you’, ‘Good luck on your NBA dream.’ Today, I consider it the dream of many people, ”he said.
“That is something very important for a basketball player. I’m just focusing on myself, on my improvement every day. I just do my best to be where I want to be in the future. “

Sotto and the rest of the G-League team, including Fil-American sensation Jalen Green, have started training at Walnut Creek in California.

Former NBA player and coach Brian Shaw will use the camp to hone the skills of the team made up of former high school stars and international prospects.
Sotto wears the number 11 as he did during his high school days at the Athenaeum.
