ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte decorated 15 wounded soldiers after visiting the site of the two suicide bombings in Jolo, Sulu, which killed 17 and injured 75 others on August 24.
Accompanied by the Secretary of Defense Delfín Lorenzana and the presidential advisor on military affairs Arthur Tabaquero, the president went from the airport to the place of the bombing on Serrantes Street immediately after his arrival at 3:40 pm, according to the lieutenant. He then went to the General Teodulfo Bautista Camp in Barangay Bus-bus where he spoke with the soldiers for more than an hour. The governor of Sulu, Abdusakur Tan, and some mayors of the city were among the audience.
After the talk with the troops, Duterte went to the Kuta Heneral Bautista hospital and decorated the 15 wounded soldiers with wounded personnel medals. He also awarded posthumous medals to the families of three slain Tausug soldiers.
The president himself announced on Sunday that he would go to Jolo and thanked supporters who organized an online concert for him on Facebook.
