British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who received intensive care and nearly died after contracting the new coronavirus, has wished President Trump and the first lady a “speedy recovery” from the virus.

Trump tweeted early Friday that he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the virus. He got tested after his close ally Hope Hicks tested positive earlier this week.

White House physician Sean Conley issued a statement confirming the diagnosis, saying the president and the first lady “are doing well at this time and plan to stay home inside the White House during their convalescence.”

Prime Minister Johnson tested positive for the virus when it began to spread widely in Britain this spring.

Johnson suffered badly from the virus and spent five days in intensive care at London’s St. Thomas Hospital in April.

He has since said that doctors made “arrangements” for his death and gave him “gallons and gallons of oxygen” at the worst of his illness to keep him alive.

“It was a tough old time, I don’t deny it. They had a strategy to deal with a ‘death of Stalin’ scenario,” Johnson said in an interview with The Sun newspaper in May.

“He was not in particularly brilliant shape and he knew there were contingency plans.”

Multiple reports in the months following his hospitalization have indicated that his health remains poor.

Downing Street, however, has been keen to dispel any suggestion of lingering health problems, with the prime minister posing for photographs while doing push-ups of photos of Johnson jogging that are distributed to the UK media.

When asked about the rumors about his health this week, Johnson told reporters that he was “fitter than a butcher’s dog” thanks to the weight loss.
