MANILA, Philippines – Philippine boxing stars Jerwin Ancajas and Eumir Marcial departed for Los Angeles on Wednesday, where they will continue their training in hopes of securing separate fights in the United States.
Ancajas was originally scheduled to defend his IBF super flyweight title against Mexican challenger Jonathan Rodríguez, but the fight was postponed many times due to visa issues and the coronavirus pandemic.
“He just comes here to train and prepare and hopefully we can give him a fight by the end of the year,” said Manny Pacquiao Promotions President Sean Gibbons.
“The pandemic really set Jerwin back. We had some problems getting your visa which we solved. Now you have. He missed his fight date, so at this point Top Rank doesn’t have dates, but we’re working on some things. “
Marcial, who recently turned pro and signed with MP Promotions, is on the same flight as Ancajas.
The Tokyo Olympian, who is determined to award the country’s first gold medal at next year’s Summer Games, will be training with Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym.
The 28-year-old Ancajas (32-1, 22 KOs) has not returned to the ring since he stopped Miguel González of Chile last December in Puebla, Mexico.
Gibbons already points to a December date for Ancajas’ ninth title defense.
