Jennylyn Mercado tells fans not to make fun of ABS-CBN stars ’opinions

MANILA – Jennylyn Mercado is calling on her fans to stop making fun of the opinions of others, including the ABS-CBN stars who are speaking out against the order forcing the network off air.

Mercado, whose shows air on ABS-CBN’s rival, GMA-7, said that “no one has any right to be mean to any other human being,” in a post on Facebook Thursday replying to an online troll.

She made it clear that these toxic commenters, like the one who took a swipe at ABS-CBN celebrities in her other post about how COVID-19 is the real enemy and “not each other,” are not welcome on her page.

“People who comment like this are not welcome on this page,” she wrote. “Bilang tao, dapat nagtutulong-tulong tayo na iuplift ang isa’t-isa lalo na ngayon na may pinagdadaanan tayong krisis.”

“Hindi yung pagtawanan or i-bash ang kapwa.”

She also shared that her adoptive mother, Mama Lydia, who passed away back in 2016, taught her this lesson and she would greatly appreciate it if her fans could learn it as well. “Nakalimutan na ba natin maging makatao?” she asked them.

The comment Mercado highlighted, which named ABS-CBN though not an actor or actress in particular, was made under an earlier post of hers, where she urged her fans to “respect each other.”

“All our opinions are valid. Just because you disagree with the opinion of others, doesn’t give you the right to belittle or make fun of anyone. Our enemy is not each other, but the virus,” she said.

Mercado’s plea came a days after the likes of Kim Chiu found herself the target of intense scrutiny online for a confusing remark on ABS-CBN’s franchise issue she had already apologized for.

“Ang Probinsyano” star Coco Martin was also criticized for expressing his anger towards the order to have ABS-CBN taken off air.

It was last May 5 when ABS-CBN was forced by the government to go off air, after its media franchise over its free channels expired.

This Wednesday, the House of Representatives Committee of the Whole passed on second reading a bill that will give ABS-CBN a provisional franchise until October 2020.

The bill will require passage on third and final reading before it is transmitted to the Senate, then to President Rodrigo Duterte for his signature and enactment into law.
