JBC endorses three SC judges to succeed Peralta

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Lawyers Council (JBC) has endorsed Supreme Court (SC) associate justices Alexander Gesmundo, Ramon Paul Hernando, and Estela Perlas-Bernabe as candidates to succeed Supreme Court Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, who will retire.

According to JBC’s letter to President Rodrigo Duterte, Peralta will optionally retire on March 27, leaving the position vacant.

“Pursuant to Article VIII, Section 9 of the Constitution, the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has the honor to submit the following nominations for the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines (Vice Hon. Diosdado M. Peralta, who will optionally retire on March 27, 2021), ”said JBC.

The document was signed by the members of the JBC, including the ex officio Peralta members, the Secretary of Justice Menardo Guevarra, the president of the Justice Committee of the House of Representatives, the representative Vicente Veloso.

Other JBC members who signed the documents were former associate justices José Mendoza and Noel Tijam, the representative of the Philippine Integrated Bar Association, Judge Franklin Demonteverde, and the representative of the private sector, Judge Toribio Ilao Jr.

Both Hernando and Gesmundo were appointed by Duterte, while Perlas-Bernabé was previously appointed by then-President Benigno Aquino III.
