ANGELES CITY – Pido Jarencio found success after a shift in focus when NorthPort passed Terrafirma, 107-96, on Saturday night at the PBA Philippine Cup.
“I actually talked to the players and at the same time I thought, ‘What if I change my focus?’ You guys saw me before, I was calm the whole time. They didn’t see me screaming there, ”he told reporters here at the University of Angeles Foundation powered by Smart 5G.
In fact, NorthPort looked like a different team throughout the contest: the Batang Pier moved the ball well, they were much more patient with their pacing, and most importantly, they chose their shots carefully.
Christian Standhardinger, who made up for a lackluster effort against NLEX last Wednesday, finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, the best team on the team, plus five assists.
It was also felt Saturday night by Kelly Nabong, who scored 18 points, threw four of six from deep and eight rebounds while covering Sean Anthony, who continued to rest after a sore hamstring.
Rookie Renzo Subido, who seemed to have also benefited greatly from the change in pace, turned off the lights in the fourth period which basically kept Terrafirma in the back seat as the game progressed.
Terrafirma edged closer to five late in the game before Subido and Nabong nailed 3-pointers that extended the lead to 104-90, less than two minutes to go.
Dyip’s star CJ Perez had 26 points, six rebounds and five assists, while rookie Roosevelt Adams threw 19 more efforts and had eight rebounds. But those efforts went down the drain and the team was winless in four outings.
“Management, like (team governor) Erick Arejola, suggested, ‘Coach, you may want to consider changing your attitude,’” Jarencio said.
NorthPort bosses felt there was a need to cheer up after a difficult start for Batang Pier in this tournament.
Jarencio agreed with his bosses in large part because “the pressure here is difficult to bear. It is increasing every time you lose. And you really can’t have a release here. “
“You would have to walk outside and eat ice cream,” he added. “Everything here is both physical and mental.”
