TOKYO – The governments of Japan and China will agree this week to allow businessmen and expats to resume their journey with each other, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
Japan and China have strong economic ties, and this move aims to boost their economies, which have been hit hard by the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic.
According to Japanese government sources, the planned agreement will mainly allow businessmen to make short trips. They will be exempt from the 14-day quarantine on the condition that they undergo virus tests before departure and on arrival; send in advance the address of your accommodation; and restricting their movements to work-related places.
Expats will be able to make medium to long-term stays, but they will not be exempt from the 14-day quarantine.
Tokyo and Beijing have been negotiating the deal, as the spread of infections in China has recently been under control with only a few dozen confirmed cases per day.
China will be the fourth country to agree with Japan to resume short-term trips, and the eleventh country and region to agree to resume medium and long-term stays.
According to the Japanese government, around 373,000 people from China entered Japan for commercial purposes in 2019, more than from any other country or region.
In 2017, there were some 32,000 Japanese companies in China, also more than in any other country or region.
