“Singer Charice (Pempengco) was the first Asian artist to have a Billboard top ten hit. Guided by producer David Foster, she wowed the world with her unmatched talent. Seven years later, she came out as a transgender man, changed his name to Jake Zyrus, and started over without the renown or voice that he had established as Charice. Why did Charice choose to live like Jake? How did her family and others dear to her react? NHK documented Jake’s life and new challenges, her joys and sorrows, and the journey it took to find her own voice. We expect the documentary to be viewed by a wide range of viewers, including those who are not interested in gender issues, ”reads the synopsis of the documentary posted on the US-based festival’s website.
