DITO Telecommunity Corp. said Monday that the planned implementation of the mobile number portability law would help the company achieve its goal of capturing 30% of the telecommunications market.
“Now, our fight (The competition) will really be in the quality of the service, ”said DITO’s managing director, Adel A. Tamano, in a virtual briefing, noting that changing telecommunications networks will be easier once consumers can retain their contact digits.
“What mobile number portability does is that you can keep your number and you are not forced to stay with the current telecommunications company that you have,” he added.
DITO’s chief technology officer Rodolfo D. Santiago said the new telecoms player, which launched its mobile services at Metro Cebu and Metro Davao on Monday, aims to grab 30% of the market “as soon as possible.”
Currently, DITO is capable of serving 37.48% of the country’s population according to the technical audit report of RG Manabat & Co.
Thirty percent of the telecommunications market is “more than enough” for DITO to be profitable, according to Santiago.
“(But) we cannot reach 30% market share with only 37% (coverage of the national population),” he said.
“He is the easiest ofachieve when 84% na ‘yung population coverage or more (Achieving the goal is easier if we increase our population coverage to 84% or more) ”, explained Mr. Santiago.
The telecommunications company is committed to covering 84% of the population and providing an Internet speed of at least 55 megabits per second (Mbps) by the end of its fifth year of business operations.
“We are not contemplating achieving the five-year commitment of 84% in five years; we want to achieve that very soon, ”said Mr. Santiago.
The Securities and Exchange Commission approved in January last year the creation of Telecommunications Connectivity, Inc. that would facilitate the portability of mobile phone numbers.
The new company would enable online number portability services with the government’s new mobile number portability initiative or Republic Law No. 11202, also known as the Mobile Number Portability Law.
It was created jointly by the main telecommunications companies in the country.
“We are fixing some things. But maybe by July it will be available to the public, ”Tamano said, referring to the actual start of the implementation of the mobile number portability law.
