Taylor Swift has written many songs inspired by her personal life, but one of the saddest tracks on Increasingly it is not based on a true story. After weeks of speculation that she and her longtime boyfriend were planning to marry, Taylor Swift revealed that “Champagne Problems” is not about turning down Joe Alwyn’s proposal; in fact, it is not inspired by her own love life.
Speculation that the couple had a secret engagement (or possibly even a wedding) accelerated after Swift released the song list for Increasingly on December 10, which featured a song called “Champagne Trouble”. That song turned out to be co-written by Alwyn (under the pseudonym William Bowery), which only added more fuel to the rumors. The photo Swift posted of the “Willow” music video of her in a white lace dress and a floral crown also didn’t do much to keep people from gossiping.
While “Trouble with champagne” make focused on a proposal, it is quickly revealed in the lyrics that the narrator rejected her boyfriend. “I dropped your hand while I danced / I left you standing there / Fallen on the landing,” Swift sings in the chorus. “Your mom’s ring in your pocket / My picture in your wallet / Your heart was made of glass, I dropped it.” Later on the bridge, she describes having to watch him go. Needless to say, the whole situation left fans confused:
Thankfully, Swift set the record straight relatively quickly, clarifying that the song is not based on her relationship with Alwyn. In a December 11 note shared on Twitter, she revealed the inspiration behind several of Increasinglysongs of. “Before I knew it, there were 17 tales, some of which mirror or intersect with each other,” the singer wrote before referring to the track as “the one where longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to finish him and one that brought a ring. ”
Swift and Alwyn have kept their romance out of the spotlight since they started dating in 2017, though the singer has shared a few tidbits about their relationship while talking about the process of making Folklore and Increasingly. However, it was actually an old song, a re-recording of his 2008 single “Love Story,” which made fans wonder if he was hinting that he would marry Alwyn. In the remake, Swift changed the chorus lyrics to “it’s just a love / baby story said yes.”
While the subtle change would fit with Swift’s story of laying Easter eggs in her music for fans to follow, the singer seemed to shut down the engagement rumors in a recent interview with Weekly entertainment when she described Alwyn as her “boyfriend.” 10th of December The Daily Mail She reportedly contacted a member of Alwyn’s family to ask about the engagement rumors, which they apparently ignored. “Sorry, I’m not going to say anything,” replied the familiar.
